Purpose of the Knowledge Module The purpose of this module is to equip learners with the theoretical understanding required to perform sampling and grading of grains and oilseeds in accordance with statutory requirements, industry standards, and workplace procedures. Learners will gain knowledge of:
• Grain and oilseed quality properties
• Grading principles and regulatory frameworks
• Representative sampling concepts
• Sampling methods and procedures
• Grading methods and processes
This knowledge underpins the practical and workplace components of the Grain Grader qualification.
The Sampling and Grading of Grains & Oilseeds course provides learners with the theoretical knowledge required to perform professional sampling and grading of agricultural commodities in compliance with statutory regulations, industry standards, and workplace procedures.
This course equips learners with a deep understanding of grain and oilseed quality characteristics, representative sampling techniques, grading principles, laboratory testing methods, and regulatory documentation requirements.
Learners will gain the competence to interpret grading standards, identify quality defects, conduct accurate sampling procedures, and apply grading calculations used in commercial grain handling environments.
This course forms the knowledge foundation for practical and workplace-based training within the Grain Grader qualification.
Upon successful completion of the Sampling and Grading of Grains & Oilseeds (KM-06) course, learners will be able to demonstrate the following competencies:
Apply industry-approved principles for representative sampling of grains and oilseeds
Accurately identify and classify physical and chemical quality characteristics
Interpret official grading standards and regulatory requirements
Detect defects, foreign matter, screenings, damaged grain, and contamination
Understand and explain laboratory testing procedures including moisture, protein, falling number, and hectolitre mass
Perform grading calculations and determine final grade classifications
Apply proper sample reduction techniques to maintain sample integrity
Complete all required grading documentation in compliance with industry regulations
Identify risks associated with incorrect sampling and grading decisions
Understand grain deterioration factors, storage risks, and pest impact on quality
